3 SPACE - Re:THINK ART

#3SpaceRethink Festival

1st - 3rd May 2013
12.00 - 9.00pm
FREE EVENT
With a FREE ticket you will have the chance to explore the 3Space Blackfriars hub and get involved in...

Scratchadelia have curated their newest ‘blind’ art exhibition exclusively for Re:THINK Blackfriar, inviting visitors to rethink how they connect with spaces and art as a sensory experience.
Creating haptic murals under the masthead of Scratchadelia, Kassim Bay and Django DeLaVega have been recycling abandoned spaces into a new kind of art museum where you are allowed to touch, making the art world accessible to people with sight loss.
During the 3 day exhibition, spect-Actors will be invited to a sensory fête where they will be able to re:experience some tactile re:production of the most iconic artworks and to re:USE their forgotten senses to re:IMAGINE the ways of seeing and re:THINK our environment.

Alice Vaughan: "Scratchadelia will run a very interesting exhibition – they use braille and relief to create artwork for people with visual impairments, making use of forgotten space within the building which you would never think could be used for an art exhibition."

But that's not all...
Check out the programme of WORKSHOPS AND MASTERCLASSES, TALKS AND DISCUSSIONS, PANELS AND PARTIES also running as part of Re:THINK.
FREE EVENT - Make sure you BOOK to guarantee a place.

BLIND DATA : PLEASE DO TOUCH ART

St Leonard's Church is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Kassim Bay and Django DeLaVega.

Creating for over 10 years under the masthead of Scratchadelia, it is not a duo you can label or put into a box, apart from a light box maybe. ..

The history of their practice stems from graffito art but has become vast and varied in its development. This has led to the investigation and use of braille in their practice which has given birth to the element of relief in their work. The process of taking away to literally create something out of nothing.

Technique and medium are utilised in both two and three-dimensional aspects. Complex ideas and emotional sensations are expressed, shifting perceptions and specifically drawing attention to the act of touching.

For the first time ever, people with sight loss will be able to experience some of the greatest masterpieces of art history such as The Creation of Adam, the Mona Lisa and The Scream.

Visitors will be encouraged to interpret art directly through their senses, particularly through touch. Sound performances, talks/workshops and guided tours for blind and sighted people will be taking place as the artists invite spect-Actors to re:find their forgotten senses.

- Private view on the Friday 23rd of November 2012 from 6pm till 10pm with sound bath performance by Lani Rocillo.

Pour l'Amour de l'Art - A SECRET SCRATCHADELIA SHOW - PART 2

MONEY LISA / THE CURSE - SCRATCHADELIA 2010

"There’s two ways I can talk about Art made by someone I respect, first impressions, mine, my dumb outline of what for me is an expressionistic fusion of the passion and determination of an uncompromising individual. Or by compromising your own experience, creating a short-circuit feedback loop.

I paint upstairs in a large building between Old St. and Shoreditch, which was supposed to be demolished over six months ago, erased, even the foundations as a site for a brand new skyscraper hotel.

This indeterminacy attracted “Scratchadelia” deepening the groove...

The ideal way to experience the work would be to witness its destruction.

So, there’s some mad fuck in the basement banging away...

Bam! Bam!! BAM!!! Morning till night, 24/7.

There’s a lot of graffiti down there left over from different artists, parties, recent
archaeological eras if you like, socio-social eras, the opposite of paleo-archeology  or old old ology).

It’s funny how the council 'cleanse' tags that deface recognised or sanctioned ‘street art’ but in the basement day'n'nite these delicate understated deep etched public images gradually define this defiantly exuberant underground music club into a true alternative art museum.

Weirdly, it’s like Art taking on the public space the same way house music crossed genres and changed the world for my post-punk post agenda DIY generation. [

I want to lam the irritation after a few days of Art.

Fuck yeah” Bam! Bam!! BAM!!! and then, I love it. No choice.

Art never works the way you expect, if it works at all there is no compromise.
It becomes a reality, part of the furniture like you forgot what was in your zone before it existed. So obvious, in spite of expectations.

These floors to ceiling shallow silhouettes obscured by pillars, club lighting...

This Marseilaise guy cutting into hardened concrete by hand.

Day after day, hard labour. Black sunglasses as some nod to protection against flying debris,

Wu-Tang Clan on headphones.  Bam! Bam!! BAM!!! Got to be some agenda...

It could be outlined by lasers, tarted up in UV, defined by any bullshit, some nights its burlesque cocktail cheeky, next the toughest grime core, an hour later the sex club you never got invited to but wish you etc...

SCRATCHADELIA makes ghosts of us all, our own desires.

This is not for sale!”

BE KIND / REWIND - A SECRET SCRATCHADELIA SHOW - PART 1

Carla Bruni Sarkozy - Scratchadelia 2010

BE KIND / REWIND

Summer 2010...

the Foundry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundry_(bar)

The Basement...

Apparently, it was supposed to be demolished for a brand new luxury Art ‘Otel at the end of the summer.
I couldn't imagine better place to create some SCRATCHADELIA m'ART'dness...
Pour l'Amour de l'Art!
On the rubble of the old culture, we will build a new one with a non-commercial heart and soul...

Winter 2010 / Endless Summer 2011...

Eventually, the building hasn't been demolished yet.
So, after scratching the walls for months...
We decided to run a secret Art show in the basement for blind people...

EYES WIDE SHUT

Museum during the day / dance floor during the night.
Cultural recycling and (re)appropriation.
Violent and fragile timeless signature of Passion...

PRIVATE VIEW: 5/11/10 - SECRET LOCATION - EAST LONDON
